Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can I connect more than one computer to my Cable/DSL Internet connection?
Answer: Yes, it may require some additional equipment. You can connect up to 10 PCs on Cable Internet, but 6 is generally the
recommended maximum to ensure a stable connection, with DSL it is best to not exceed 5 connections.
Question: Is a router needed to connect more than one computer to Cable/DSL expensive?
Answer: Yes, depending on the Cable/DSL modem you have. Some Cable modems include a Router Check with your Cable/DSL
provider before buying equipment, for compatibility.
Question: What is Spyware/Adware and how does it hurt my computer?
Answer: Spyware are programs that monitor different things you do on your computer. i.e. Some of the Spyware devices will
monitor your keystrokes when entering passwords for your online banking, or email etc,. Whereas, Adware are links to
websites, mostly pornography sites and these links embed themselves into your computer. They access the Internet when you
are connected to update themselves. Most often, the result of these links are Pop-up windows for Pornography, buying different
products and services, changing you Home page to another, possibly Pornography or a search site that does not search what you
want. All this activity slows down your computer and may get to the point where you cannot get to any websites, except where
the links send you because the links will Re-Direct you to where it is programmed to send you.
Question: Is it easy to remove the Spyware/Adware?
Answer: Yes & No. There are many different forms of Spyware/Adware, many of these can be removed by Spyware/Adware
removal programs, similar to a Virus program.
However, if the Spyware/Adware has embedded itself in your computer, this is an area called System Restore. When you remove
the application, it just Re-installs itself. To permanently remove the spyware application, is very time consuming and there is no
guarantee that all the pieces will be removed, it sometimes better to erase your computer hard drive and Re-install Windows
from the original CDs. i.e. New Term: Malicious Software (Malware)
Question: How does a Virus get on my computer and how can I prevent it?
Answer: A virus is a software program or script designed to perform a specific task. Many viruses are designed to send email
from your computer to every name in your address book and attach itself to these messages. When your friend opens the
attachment or email in many cases, the virus spreads. The good news is, if you are using an On-line email system, AOL, Yahoo,
Hotmail, etc, they often have Virus programs to scan incoming and outgoing mail for you.
Most viruses are written for Microsoft applications, Outlook Express, Windows, Office, etc.. However, many of these viruses can
damage/destroy your applications and even erase your computer's hard drive (yes this can happen, though rare). Having a good
virus software on your computer and keeping it up to date is the best safeguard against viruses. You should run a full virus
scan at least once a month.
